Works/
San Jose
Works' Artist-in-Residence program has enabled us to support emerging
artists by offering hard-to-find studio space and exposure to the local
arts community. Launched in 1999, four Bay Area artists are awarded a
studio for three months. Independent jurors make each year’s selection.
Toward the end of the artists’ residency, Works hosts an open
studio/slide talk or demonstration, which is open to the public.
Artists are selected for one year’s cycle
beginning in June. Applications are available in the early spring and the
application deadline is usually in April. Works places no limitations on
media (visual, film, video, interdisciplinary and performance), however
there are certain restrictions due to the proximity of our gallery (no
kerosene, turpentine-based products, spray mount, kilns, welding). No
power tools or loud music during gallery hours. The non-live in
studio space (approximately 15’x 15’) is adjacent to Works’
gallery at 30 North Third Street in downtown San Jose.
Applicants must be residents of Santa Clara County; 18 years and older; no
full-time students; previous grantees are ineligible for 3 years.

The
Drawing Center Slide Registry program
The Slide Registry features images of works by approximately 2,000
artists who have participated in the Viewing Program. Their work has been
selected to be on file by The Drawing Center's curatorial committee. The
Slide Registry is a public resource for contemporary drawing that is
consulted by curators, art dealers, collectors, and art educators. Each
file includes a résumé, one sheet of slides, and an optional artist's
statement and press clippings. All materials must be updated at least
every two years to remain on file. In order to assist researchers, the
files are catalogued alphabetically and cross-referenced by style and
media.
Researchers who would like to access the Slide Registry can call The
Drawing Center for an appointment. A program administrator will create a
customized reference list based on the researcher's criteria.
Artists not chosen for inclusion in the Slide Registry are encouraged to
periodically resubmit new bodies of work for consideration.
